AMERICAN BLADESMITH SOCIETY

American Bladesmith Society

The American Bladesmith Society, Inc. (ABS) is a corporation with educational, scientific, and charitable purposes. It was formed primarily to encourage and promote activities involving the art and science of forging metal, particularly tools, weapons and art forms.

The objectives of the educational programs of the ABS are to inform and educate knife makers and the public about the art, science, technology, history and culture relating to forged edged tools, weapons and artifacts and the proper care and use of these objects.

The original Board of Directors for the American Bladesmith Society was: William F. Moran, Jr., Bill Bagwell, Don Hastings and B.R. Hughes.

LEATHER WORK

Every knife deserves the right sheath.

Handmade leather sheaths designed to protect the blade and carry the same handcrafted character as the knife itself.

Custom sheath work is available together with custom knife commissions.

IN THE FIELD

Made to be used.

Knives belong outdoors. In the field, at camp, on the trail and wherever honest work takes them.

KNIFE CARE & STORAGE

Take care of your knife.
It will last for generations.

Handmade knives are made to be used, but they also deserve proper care. A few simple habits will help preserve the blade, handle and leather sheath.

01

Keep the blade clean & dry

After use, wipe the blade clean and dry it thoroughly. Do not leave moisture, food residue or dirt on the steel.

02

Protect the steel

For carbon and non-stainless steels, apply a very light coat of suitable protective oil before storage. A clean, dry blade is the best defense against corrosion.

03

Respect the handle

Natural materials such as antler and wood should not be soaked or exposed to prolonged heat, excessive humidity or sudden temperature changes.

04

Care for the sheath

Leather is a natural material. Keep the sheath dry, avoid prolonged contact with water and allow it to dry naturally if it becomes wet.

05

Store it properly

For long-term storage, keep the knife in a dry, ventilated place. If the blade is carbon steel, avoid storing it for extended periods inside a leather sheath.

06

Use the right tool

A knife is a cutting tool. Avoid prying, twisting, chopping inappropriate materials or striking the blade against hard objects.
